To ensure you are protected in the event of hardware failure we use redundant hardware, automatically switching to redundant computers, hard drives, or power if the hardware faults. Exact was designed from the ground up with 100% Data Privacy to discourage potential hackers from stealing, cracking, or mining your data. This makes your backed up data of no value to anyone except you since it is unintelligible to anyone not authorized to read it.

Exact eliminates this problem with 100% Data Privacy. Building on an innovative technology known as OPTIC, Exact can backup, query, and restore your backup data while it is encrypted. Since your backup data is always encrypted when not on your computer, and your encryption key never leaves your computer, no one other than you can know what files are being backed up, their contents, or their associated metadata.

All information related to a customer's online file backup is encrypted using a private key.

Security is based on the assumption that if you put up enough barriers around something valuable, and make the barriers strong enough, thieves will seek easier targets elsewhere. This works in some cases, but if the target is attractive enough, thieves just try harder.

Security Holes Found in Other Online Backup Products

Data Center
Other online backup products need to know your directory names and file names so they can restore your files. They may also decrypt your backup data before sending it to you over the internet. The fact that your data is decrypted at the provider’s data center may give unscrupulous employees access to your data.

Encrypting only your file data and using SSL to transfer that data is insufficient protection. Accepting this limitation essentially means you trust all their employees with the names and contents of your files.

With Exact, online backup is worry-free because your file and directory names, data, and metadata are never exposed anywhere other than on your own computer. You have 100% Data Privacy.

Backup to and Restore from Physical Media
Other online backup products that backup or restore your files to physical media, such as DVD or external hard drives, often store your files unencrypted on this media. This is a big problem. If the media is lost or stolen during shipping, anyone in possession of the media can access any of your files.

Exact Express allows you to quickly create or update your online backup or restore files via an external hard drive. Your files are always encrypted on the external drive, so if the drive is lost or stolen, your files are always safe.

Internet Browsers
Even with SSL security, internet browsers do not provide end-to-end security nor privacy. They can transfer data securely, but that has no effect if your backup data is in an unencrypted state on a data center server. Despite this tremendous threat to your data, other online backup products allow you to access your files from an internet browser.

Your data is not secure nor private if you can browse your backup data and see your directory names and file names in your internet browser, unless you installed specific software on the browser and that software uses your encryption key to secure your data end-to-end.

Exact does not provide browser access to your online files. Your online files can only be accessed through the secure Exact client.

Remote or Local Hacker Access
If a hacker can successfully break into the data center where your backup data is stored, they will have an easier time accessing your private data if your directory names, file names and associated metadata are stored unencrypted.

Directory names, file names and metadata give hackers and thieves a great deal of information about who your customers are, the location associated with your pictures via their geo-tagging metadata, and whether the information in a specific file is worth cracking (e.g., “retirement bank account.xls”).
Worse yet, using the technique of Known Plaintext Attack, metadata can provide the key to crack all your backup files (i.e., gain access to their contents).

Exact backup data is always encrypted. This includes directory names, file names and metadata. Concerns over remote or local hacker access do not apply.
